The Apple iPad

The iPad is a tablet computer developed and manufactured by Apple Inc. It was announced on 27 January 2010 and is designed as a new category of device, something between a smartphone and a laptop computer.

Your free iPad features a 9.7-inch or (25 cm) LED backlit multi-touch screen with a resolution of 1024x768, between 16 and 64 gigabytes (GB) of flash memory (depending on model), a 1-gigahertz (GHz) Apple A4 processor, Bluetooth version 2.1, and a 30-pin dock connector to enable the device to sync with iTunes and connect with wired accessories.

Rather than running Apple’s Leopard operating system as expected, the iPad runs a modified version of the iPhone operating system with its applications have been redesigned to take advantage of the much larger screen.

Two models have so far been announced, one with 802.11n Wi-Fi and one with 802.11n Wi-Fi and 3G and assisted GPS. Both models have sub-models with three different memory capacities.

The iPad is seen as a direct competitor to Amazon’s Kindle book reader as it is the first Apple device to use the iBookstore service in conjunction with the iBooks ebook reading application.

The Wi-Fi version of the iPad is to go on sale in the US on 3 April 2010 with the iPad Wi-Fi + 3G version becoming available at the end of April. Consumers in Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Spain, Switzerland and the UK will be able to purchase both versions of the iPad from late April.
